How a load is sorted

The yard names the kind from the form of the metal and from what is still attached. Paint, iron, oil and plastic are named before a rate. A mixed load is priced only after it is seen.

  • Coils of shiny salmon-pink bare copper wire on a steel table

    Bare bright wire

    Stripped copper wire, salmon-pink and bright, free of insulation, solder and burnt ends. This is the cleanest copper in the trade.

  • Clean dull copper pipes and flat copper busbar on a concrete floor

    Number 1 copper

    Clean pipe, busbar, sheet and thick solids. The surface may be a dull reddish brown, but solder, paint and brass fittings are already off.

  • Copper pipes with soldered joints and patches of old paint

    Number 2 copper

    Copper with soldered joints, paint, enamel or a heavier tarnish, and pipe that still has a fitting. It is still copper. It needs more work than number 1.

  • Black insulated cable with salmon-pink copper strands at the cut ends

    Insulated wire

    Copper cable with the plastic still on. The rate follows how much of the weight is copper, not the weight of the sheath.

    Turnings

    Fine copper swarf from machining, often oily. It stays in its own bin, away from bright wire.

    Motors and radiators

    Electric motors, and radiators whose tubes are copper. Copper is only part of the weight. Brass fittings and aluminium radiators are not called copper. The recoverable copper is named after the piece is seen.
